(A) If the discovery of the contraband leads to the

imprisonment or fining of the offender, the standard reward is usually two-fifths of treble duty-paid value of the goods. If the offenders not brought to justice, e.g. if the owner of the contraband cannot be found, the reward is substa less.

If the contraband is discovered through informat the informer's share of the reward usually is one-third.

Where the contraband is discovered by a crew of two or more Officers, one fourth of the reward remaining after deduction of the infomer's sha (if any) is allocated to the Officer or Officer who actually discover the goods and the remaini three-fourths is divided among the crew general in specified proportions.

(D) In cases where the reward as calculated on the a basis would exceed £10, or where an individual'! share would exceed £5., the amount so calculetėj is usually somewhat curtailed. On the other ha where the detection of the contraband was a matf of special merit, the amount of the reward may be increased.

As regards the concluding sentence of paragraf of the Governor's Despatch, the extent to which subordinate Officers are permitted to undertake sear◊ for contraband on their own authority depends on the nature of the search. Thus subordinate Officers may on their own authority search the baggage of passenger when landing from foreign, or the personal effects of seamen on board ships from foreign. But they may not the persons either of passengers or seamen without hig authority. Nor may they enter private premises to se for contraband without special authority.
